How conventional fire alarm systems work

When a device activates, the panel shows which zone is in alarm, but not which specific detector. To find the exact source, staff or the fire brigade must search that zone. It is a simple, proven, and affordable technology that has protected buildings for decades.
How addressable fire alarm systems work
An addressable system gives every detector and call point its own unique electronic address. Devices sit on a loop connected to an intelligent panel that can identify each one individually.
When a device triggers, the panel displays the exact location — "Smoke detector, Level 3, Room 12" — allowing a far faster, more precise response. Many addressable devices also report dirt build-up or faults, which supports condition-based maintenance and reduces false alarms.
Pros and cons of each
Both systems can be fully compliant when correctly designed and installed. The right choice depends on building size, complexity, and budget.
- Conventional — advantages: lower upfront cost, simple to design, and cost-effective for small premises.
- Conventional — limitations: only zone-level location, more cabling in larger buildings, and less diagnostic information.
- Addressable — advantages: pinpoint device location, faster response, easier fault-finding, better false-alarm management, and simpler expansion.

As a general rule, the larger and more complex the building, the stronger the case for an addressable fire alarm system.
- Conventional suits small shops, single-storey workshops, small offices, and other compact premises with a handful of zones.
- Addressable suits factories, warehouses, high-rise offices, hotels, hospitals, shopping complexes, and any building where quickly identifying the exact alarm location is critical to safe evacuation.
For high-occupancy or high-rise buildings in Seremban and across Negeri Sembilan, addressable systems are usually the practical choice and are often expected during BOMBA plan approval.
Detector types and system integration
Whichever panel you choose, selecting the correct detectors matters just as much. Common choices include:
- Smoke detectors (optical or ionisation) for early warning in offices, corridors, and bedrooms.
- Heat detectors for kitchens, plant rooms, and dusty or dirty areas where smoke detectors would false-alarm.
- Beam and aspirating detectors for large open spaces such as warehouses and atriums.
- Manual call points along escape routes and at exits.
A modern fire alarm system rarely works alone. It should integrate with other fire protection measures — sprinklers, fire pumps, smoke control and pressurisation fans, magnetic door releases, lift homing, and the public address or voice evacuation system.
