The role of the fire pump set
A fire pump system draws water from a stored supply, usually a dedicated fire water tank, and boosts it to the pressure and flow needed by the building's fire protection installations. It must start automatically the moment system pressure drops, run reliably, and keep running for the full design duration of a fire event.
Because it is life-safety equipment, a fire pump set is engineered for reliability above all else. It sits at the heart of the wider fire protection system, feeding sprinklers, hydrants, hose reels and wet risers throughout the building.
Main types of pump in a fire pump set
A typical fire pump set is not a single pump but a coordinated group, each with a defined role:
- Electric duty pump: the main working pump, driven by an electric motor. It handles the full demand of the fire system during normal conditions and is usually the primary pump.
- Diesel standby pump: a backup pump driven by a diesel engine. It takes over automatically if the electric pump fails or if mains power is lost during a fire, which is a real risk in an emergency. Its independence from the electrical supply is exactly why it is required.
- Jockey pump: a small pump that maintains steady pressure in the pipework. It tops up minor pressure losses from small leaks so the main pumps only start for a genuine demand, not for every small drop.
Together these ensure that water is always available, whether the fault is a failed motor, a power cut, or normal system leakage.
How fire pump sizing is determined
Pump sizing is never guesswork. It is calculated from the most demanding scenario the system must satisfy, expressed as two figures:
- Flow rate (litres per minute) — the total water demand of the connected systems operating together, such as sprinklers plus hydrants.
- Pressure (head) — enough to overcome the building height, pipe friction losses, and the residual pressure required at the most remote or highest outlet.
The design is based on the building's hazard classification and occupancy, following the Uniform Building By-Laws 1984 (UBBL) and the relevant Malaysian Standards for hydrant and sprinkler installations. Getting these figures right is critical: an undersized pump cannot protect the building, while an oversized one wastes cost and can cause pressure problems.
Pump-room requirements and BOMBA compliance
The pump room itself is regulated. Good practice and BOMBA (Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia) expectations include:
- Adequate ventilation, especially for the diesel engine's cooling and exhaust.
- Proper drainage and adequate space around each pump for maintenance access.
- A guaranteed fire water tank capacity sized for the required duration of operation.
- A reliable fuel supply for the diesel engine and independent power arrangements.
Compliance does not end at installation. Fire pumps must be tested and maintained on a regular schedule, including routine running of the diesel engine, checking automatic start on pressure drop, and periodic flow performance testing. These records support the annual fire certificate (Bomba certification) and demonstrate that the system will perform when needed.
