Server rooms and data centres hold assets far more valuable than the hardware itself: your data, your uptime, and your business continuity. When a fire starts in one of these spaces, a conventional sprinkler can put out the flames but destroy every energised circuit board in the process. Why water-based systems are unsuitable for electronics

Water and electricity do not mix. Discharging a sprinkler over live server racks risks short circuits, corrosion, and total equipment loss, even if the fire itself was small. Foam and dry powder systems leave residue that is equally destructive to fine electronics and connectors.

For rooms full of servers, switchgear, UPS units, and telecommunications equipment, the goal is a clean extinguishing agent: one that leaves no residue, is electrically non-conductive, and is safe to use around expensive hardware. That is exactly what clean-agent gas suppression is designed to deliver.

How clean-agent gas suppression systems work

A clean-agent gas suppression system stores an extinguishing agent under pressure in cylinders. When fire detectors confirm a genuine event, the system releases the agent through a network of pipework and nozzles, flooding the entire protected room to a designed concentration within seconds. There are two broad families of agent:

  • Chemical agents such as FM-200 (HFC-227ea) and Novec 1230. These absorb heat and interrupt the combustion process. They are discharged as a liquid that rapidly turns to gas and require relatively little storage space.
  • Inert gases such as IG-55 or IG-541, which are blends of nitrogen, argon and sometimes carbon dioxide. These work by reducing the oxygen concentration in the room to a level that no longer supports combustion, while remaining safe for occupants who need to evacuate.

Both approaches suppress fire quickly and leave no residue, so equipment can often be brought back online once the cause is investigated and the room is ventilated.

Room integrity and hold time

A gas suppression system only works if the agent stays in the room long enough to extinguish the fire and prevent re-ignition. This is measured by the hold time, the period the design concentration is maintained after discharge, typically ten minutes.

Achieving this depends on room integrity. Gaps around cable trays, door frames, raised floors and ceiling voids all let the agent leak away too quickly. For this reason every installation should be verified with a room integrity (fan) test that confirms the enclosure can hold the agent for the required period. Automatic damper closure and sealed penetrations are essential parts of the design.

Design considerations for server rooms and data centres

A reliable system is more than a set of cylinders. Good design considers the whole room and how it is used:

  • Detection: cross-zoned or aspirating smoke detection gives early, reliable confirmation before discharge, reducing the risk of a false release.
  • Agent quantity: the volume of agent must match the room's exact dimensions, including floor and ceiling voids, to reach the correct design concentration.
  • Pressure relief: venting must be provided so the pressure surge on discharge does not damage the building fabric.
  • Occupant safety: clear alarms, discharge signage, and a pre-discharge delay allow anyone inside to leave safely.
  • Interfaces: the system should shut down air handling, close dampers, and signal the building fire alarm and BOMBA-monitored panel.

In Malaysia these systems must align with the Uniform Building By-Laws 1984 (UBBL), relevant Malaysian Standards, and the requirements of Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia (BOMBA).
